The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto

Opened in 1963, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto collects, preserves, and conducts research and study of artworks and materials related to modern and contemporary art. One of the most distinctive features of the museum’s activities is its emphasis on crafts and Kyoto’s modern art.

The building was designed by architect Maki Fumihiko. The exterior is characterized by a grid of Portuguese granite and a symmetrical façade. Once inside, the entrance is softly lit by white marble and high ceilings, the rear lobby offers lovely views of the canal, and the glass stairwells at the four corners of the museum create an open architecture.
