Special Experiences: Meet the ceramic Artist “Eiraku” and special tea ceremony “Senke Jusshoku” at a Zen Temple

Join a tour of the “doburo” (a type of kiln) as well as the pottery studio and gallery of ceramic artist Eiraku Zengoro, all part of the “Senke Jusshoku” tradition (referring to the ten traditional crafts associated with the Sen family tea ceremony). Next, enjoy a private visit to the Shoden Eigen-in temple, where you’ll be guided through the garden by the temple’s head priest, and experience a tea ceremony in the Uraku-Ryu style at the Jo-an Tea Ceremony House, a national treasure and restored site.

Senke Jusshoku
The ten designated craftsmen families are called Senke Jusshoku. In 1915, when a department store held an exhibition of the utensils that the craftsmen had made to the Iemotos’ designs, they were called ‘Senke Jusshoku’ for the first time.

Shoden Eigen-in Temple
A Zen temple, is also a sub-temple of Kennin-ji temple, which is the head temple in the Rinzai Kennin-ji Sect of Buddhism. A sub-temple was usually a temple built after the death of the founder of a sect, or a high priest of a major or famous temple. It would have been built by disciples within the precincts of the temple to hold the grave and eternalize the virtues of the deceased. Shoden Eigen-in temple was formed upon the merger of multiple temples that were patronized by military leaders in Japan. Uraku-Ryu style for tea ceremony : Uraku school (Uraku-ryu) is one of the various schools of tea ceremony started by Nagamasu ODA (Urakusai), who was the real younger brother of Nobunaga ODA.
