[FULL] Guided Tour: Kawai Kanjirō’s House (Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Museum)

The house and museum is the residence and ceramic workshop designed and built by one of Japan’s most respected ceramists, Kawai Kanjirō. Ms. Tamae Sagi, the curator of the museum and a grandchild of Kawai Kanjirō, will guide visitors through the life and work of the artist.

Kawai Kanjirō's House

Kawai Kanjirō (1890-1966) was a ceramic artist and key figure in the Mingei movement. Alongside Yanagi Sōetsu, Hamada Shōji, and Bernard Leach, he actively participated in Japan’s craft movement. His residence, preserved as he lived in it, showcases a wealth of wood furnishings, ceramics, and objects collected or created during the craft movement. Every element, from the architecture to the furniture and decorations, reflects Kawai’s unique design style and personal collection, creating a captivating blend of individuality and harmonious aesthetics. Visit this tranquil space in Kyoto’s town center and immerse yourself in the ambiance of the time Kawai lived.
