[FULL] Guided Tour: Gardens of Tōfuku-ji & Kōmyō-in Temples

Visit and experience two Zen gardens of Tōfuku-ji & Kōmyō-in Temples, both created in 1939 by the Shōwa-era master gardener Mirei Shigemori. Shigemori explored and pursued the “Eternal Modern”in his practice of Japanese garden design.
Garden Designer Yuri Ugaya will talk about not only how to see the gardens, but also Shigemori’s design sensibility and philosophy.

Yuri Ugaya

Ms. Ugaya is a renowned garden designer and director, known for her expertise in Japanese gardens. She has authored seven books on the subject and holds a bachelor’s degree in Japanese cultural history from Doshisha University and a master’s degree in horticulture from Awaji Landscape and Horticulture Academy. Yuri further expanded her knowledge by studying horticulture and landscape design at the School of Niagara Horticulture in Canada and gaining valuable experience as an intern at Kew Garden in the UK. She has since showcased her talent through notable projects, including the design and direction of the Japanese garden for the Japan National Tourism Organization event at the Grandcentral station in NYC in 2017 and the renowned Japanese garden at the Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo in 2021.
