Nishikawa has been experimenting with abstract expression using buildings and structures under construction, renovation, or destruction, covered with fabric-like sheets that suddenly appear in the city as the subject. On the other side of the sheets, the landscape is transformed in a short period of time, with new buildings appearing or land being cleared. This reminds us that what we see is not stable nor permanent but is constantly changing. Nishikawa’s “Shield House” painting is an attempt to express the “flickering nature of all things,” “emergence and disappearance”, and “time”. Presentation at ACK23 is with his paintings that depict buddhist temples under renovation, as Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizudera or Byodoin.
