Sokyo Gallery is pleased to present a two-person exhibition by Kimiyo Mishima and Mika Horie in the “Kyoto Meeting” section of Art Collaboration Kyoto. Fabienne Stephan has been invited as a curator for this exhibition, which will be a collaboration of tradition, culture, and art that Kyoto has built up.
Mishima’s humorous ceramic sculptures express the fear of trash and information that is everywhere, such as newspapers, magazines, empty cans, etc. Horie’s works are created through the lens of the moment. Horie captures the poetic transitions of nature through her lens camera and transfers them onto handmade Japanese washi paper using cyanotype with sunlight. Harking back to the Manyo period, when people were in awe of nature, Horie’s works raise a warning against the rapid flow of time and consumer society of today.
With the cooperation of Nakanishi Shohoken, this exhibition will be an experiment in pairing Mishima’s works with antique pieces such as Koshimizuyaki and Ko-Iga. At the fair, tea ceremony master Soshin Kimura will serve guests Japanese sweets and green tea with the theme of his book “One Day, One Cake. We hope you will enjoy this precious encounter unique to Kyoto, which can only be experienced at “Kyoto Meeting”.
Gallery Information
Sokyo Gallery was established in 2013, in a corner of the antique district of Gion, Kyoto. With more than 30 domestic and international artists under two major programs - contemporary art and contemporary crafts - the gallery showcases works in ceramics, lacquer, painting, photography, drawing, and textiles. In addition to exhibitions, Sokyo participates in major art fairs in Japan and abroad. The gallery shows working using traditional Japanese materials; works that place identity at the conceptual level; and foreign artists who have a connection to Japan. In 2018, Sokyo founded the Atsumi Project, which focuses exclusively on contemporary art. In 2022, the gallery established CAT (Collaborative Art Team), a child-led art initiative that is the first non-profit organization of its kind in Japan. With children's sharp ideas and creativity, we hope CAT contributes to advancing society in the future.
